I recently got a letter explaining there is a recall for helmets from the Advanced Carbon Composites Inc. (ACC) that manufactures helmets for motorcycle riders. It says in the letter that the helmet failed the penetration test required from the Department of Transportation. The company has designed their helmet with a new foam liner material that is supposed to pass the penetration test. Unfortunately there have been accidents with people using this helmet and some have gotten seriously injured as a result. When I read this, I wanted to throw my helmet in the wastebasket right away. Has anyone else gotten a letter from this company?

I’ve got a question regarding lowering the idle on a 2007 softail. I realize if I lower the idle too low, it will result in a low oil pressure, charging problems, etc. I have read the users manual thoroughly and it explained that the preferable idle range is 900-1100 rpm. It also recommends the idle should be lowered by an authorized technician who is knowledgeable on this topic. Well, I’ve been looking around the bike and I noticed an adjustable screw located behind the air filter backing plate. Is this what controls the idle? Can I simply adjust this screw and lower the idle myself, without taking it to the shop?

From my experience, there are several things that can contribute to your bike’s problem. It could be old gas or your running it too low on gas causing dirt in the tank to be pumped into the fuel line. It could also be bad gas at the gas station or a broken vacuum line. In regards to the spark plugs, make sure they are gapped to the right measurement. You can go online or call your local dealer to find out what the correct gap measurements are, but in my overall opinion, I think your problem is gas related.

The other day I was at the dealership and I was looking at the wide glide and the softail custom. In comparing the two motorcycles I noticed the main difference between the two is the engine. The wide glide has a rubber mounted engine, while the custom softail has a hard mounted engine. In addition, the wide glide has a regular driving seat, but the softail custom has a king/queen seat that is very comfortable and roomy. Finally the wide glide appears to have external shocks and the softail custom has internal shocks. That’s just some of the difference I noticed. Does anyone have experience on both of these bikes? Am I missing any other important differences?

The numbers on the sidewall of a tire can be difficult to de-code if you’re not familiar with their significance. I had problems too when I was trying to understand their importance. Based on the numbers you mentioned 130/90HB-16 stands for the tire width, aspect ratio, speed rate, construction type, and the diameter of the rim. So for your tire numbers, 130 indicates the tire has a 130 mm tread width. The number 90 is the aspect ratio, which is the sidewall height. This is listed as a percentage, so for a 130/90 the aspect ratio/sidewall is 90% of the tread width. Lastly, the number 16 is the rim diameter. The letter H stands for speed rating, which means your tire has a max speed of 130 MP. The next letter stands for the type of construction of the tire. Your tire has the letter B, which stands for bias ply instead of radial instruction, which would have the letter R. |

When I put my motorcycle in storage, I realize that my motorcycle battery will eventually go dead since it is not being driven on a regular basis. To prevent this from happening I always take the battery out of the motorcycle and attach a battery charger to the battery so it can recharge the battery when it is low and shut off when it is fully charged. This saves you time and money of purchasing a new battery when your bike is out from storage. Another thing I do is cover my motorcycle when it’s in storage. This will protect my bike from any scratches or damages. In addition, the temperature of the storage unit can get cold in the winter time. A cold storage unit might cause the paint on your bike to crack so keeping a thick blanket over it will save guard the paint or any other feature of the bike from getting damaged. |

My friend has a Road King with a damaged front-end fender that needs to be replaced. He would like to change the front-end fender with a Road Glide front-end fender. The reason for replacing it with a Road Glide fender is because he likes the look it generates. However, he is concerned that the front edge might get chipped from road debris. Does anyone here know where he can find a slim, low profile chrome fender tip that will fit the Road Glide? So far Kuryakyn is the only company that makes what we are looking for, but it only fits the Fat Boy and thinner fenders. Does anyone know where else we can look? |
